The Layout of the City

2025

“A model is always a falsehood. It is a de-realized, imagined space—a kind of utopia that merely aspires to resemble reality, whether one that once existed or one yet to come into being. Before us is a construction kit, an idea reduced to its barest outline. Is it a toy, the result of painstaking labor, or an act of painful escapism? A labyrinth, or an archive of values? The answer depends on why the model was made, on its architects, and on those who later stop to examine it. And, of course, on those who, without even realizing it, already live within this model—or are only just about to.”
