It is impossible to fully get used to fear. Convincing yourself to sleep and eat is not enough, because any reminder, any ordinary object can reactivate memory.
Berry picking is an ordinary routine: in the northern marshes, in my grandmother's garden, or while hiking in the mountains. You take this practical tool and, in a single sweep, gather a whole handful—everything it catches, without selection or discrimination.
A homemade iron tool scraping against the ground. Rust.
Fear turns things into metaphors where none existed before. Equipment made by one's own hands offers no illusion of creation.
Things stained by fear—unspoken and unnamed—remain beside us, altering and distorting both ourselves and the limits of what can be spoken.
